We are a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) with a 62% Latinx student population primarily residing in Gilroy, Hollister, and Morgan Hill. With our main campus nestled in the hills of Gilroy and a satellite campus in downtown Hollister soon to become a full-service center, we are committed to achieving educational equity for all students in our community. The Position


The Adapted Physical Education (APE) program is an integral part of the Accessible Education Center (AEC) and is accountable for compliance with Title 5 state regulations. Courses are designed to address a student's educational and functional limitations that are directly related to their verified disability. The lead faculty position for the APE program provides instruction for assigned courses which consists of aquatic exercise as well as cardiovascular fitness and resistance training for students with disabilities. The APE Instructor provides direct instruction for students on campus, online and community settings.


The successful candidate for this tenure track position will be expected to provide instruction and other services for students with a variety of disabilities. They will also be expected to provide leadership in advancing the goals of adapted physical education on local and regional levels.


DESIRABLE ATTRIBUTES



  • Recent Adapted Physical Education teaching experience in the California Community Colleges with adults with disabilities (at least one year).



  • Experience working with people with disabilities in an exercise/physical education environment (e.g. weight training, flexibility, movement techniques, adapted aquatic exercise and aerobics).



  • Experience with Adapted Physical Education program management and facility coordination.



  • Experience in directing and coordinating job duties for lifeguards and mobility aides who assist students in the adapted physical education courses.

  • Knowledge of the Adapted Physical Education National Standards (APENS).


REQUIREMENTS


Educational and Professional Requirements



  • Master's in physical education, exercise science, education with an emphasis in physical education, kinesiology, physiology of exercise or adaptive physical education OR

  • Bachelor's in any of the above AND Master's in any life science, dance, physiology, health education, recreation administration or physical therapy OR the equivalent, AND

  • 15-semester units of upper-division or graduate study in adapted physical education AND

  • Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff, AND

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and employ culturally relevant course content, anti-racist pedagogical techniques, and effective practices for engaging students who are diverse and/or from historically underrepresented groups.

  • Proof of current CPR with AED and First Aid certification from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association. (CPR with AED and First Aid certification must be completed by the start of assignment but is not necessary to qualify for interview).

  5. Has created research, scholarship, media, art, or cultural/political engagement opportunities with the Hispanic/Latinx community and/or communities historically underrepresented and underserved in higher education.

  6. Has skills in developing cross-cultural and anti-racist communication, collaboration, and pedagogy.


Essential Duties


The following duties are typical of those performed by employees in this job title; however, employees may perform other related duties, and not all duties listed are necessarily performed by each employee in the job title:



  • Provide 14-16 equivalent hours of instruction per semester both in person and online, in accordance with established course outlines and departmental procedures in the area of adapted physical education.

  • Coordinate with the Accessible Education Center (AEC) as appropriate to document student need and eligibility and maintain student confidentiality as required by Title 5 regulations.

  • Assess student needs and provide appropriate instruction in adapted aquatic and fitness courses and evaluate progress towards goals as stated in the Academic Accommodation Plan (AAP).

  • Provide faculty leadership in adapted physical education instruction and support to students with disabilities contributing to their academic and career success.

  • Develop curriculum, modes of instruction, selection of course materials, equipment, and technology in Adapted Physical Education in accordance with California State Title 5 "Educational Assistance Class" designation.

  • Develop and revise course materials as necessary and assist in curriculum development and review and assess student learning outcomes for APE courses.

  • Maintain current expertise in teaching methodologies, discipline content, classroom management, safety regulations and APE instructional equipment.

  • Promote the APE program to the local community and facilitate registration for the APE courses.

  • Conduct enrollment management for semester course offerings through enrollment analytics and in accordance with Title 5 regulations regarding Measurable Progress and Repeatability in coordination with AEC.

  • Attend monthly department meetings and periodic division meetings.

  • Serve as an ADA resource to the Health and Safety / Facility and Grounds committees.

  • Engage in the student learning outcomes (SLO) and assessment process as a means of establishing student progress in relationship to curriculum and departmental goals.

  • Participate in campus shared governance and contribute to department and campus-wide student success initiatives.

  • Participate in ongoing professional learning, particularly around anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion.

  • Adhere to department, division, and campus policies and procedures for faculty employees.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



  • Experience teaching in adapted physical education or a related field.

  • Knowledge of ADA issues that may affect the APE program and students.

  • Effective communication and collaboration with faculty and staff to support student success.

  • Ability to organize, demonstrate and explain materials which correspond with students' abilities, levels of preparation, and learning styles.

  • Knowledge of current theories and teaching methods, especially in a culturally diverse and aging student population.

  • Ability to conduct classes in a virtual learning environment using Canvas or other methods of remote learning.

  • Demonstrated ability related to organizational detail, documentation and follow-through related to working with students in an adapted physical education or related field.
