Example of Duties
The Adaptive Physical Education Instructor provides instruction to Access Resource Center students enrolled in Adaptive Physical Education courses. Students receive individualized or small group instruction in a physical education class designed for students with disabilities. Students typically require instruction in the following areas: (e.g. assistance with proper use of exercise equipment, and developing, implementing, and monitoring exercise plans). This is a full-time, tenure track position.
The duties below are representative of the duties of the classification and are not intended to cover all of the duties performed by the incumbent(s) of any position. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the scope of work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to this classification.
1. Teach all courses in Adaptive Physical Education in accordance with program and scheduling needs;
2. Assist in the assessment, development, and revision of curriculum, including student learning outcomes, assessment processes, and program review;
3. Collaborate with other instructors to enhance instruction, curriculum, and student success;
4. Participate in the development and/or selection of course materials, equipment and technology, and distance education (online teaching) that will enhance course offerings of the department;
5. Maintain expertise in current teaching methodologies, technologies, and curricula and develop new instructional materials and techniques to meet the changing needs of students;
6. Consult with students during regularly scheduled office hours;
7. Serve as a member of division, department, and college committees;
8. Perform other duties as required by contract, collective bargaining agreement, and general institutional needs in a timely manner;
9. Teach a variety of courses, during the day, evening, or online at the Monterey campus, Marina Education Center and/or other designated locations.
10. Moderate physical effort; occasional standing or walking; assisting students with mobility issues and transferring, handling of equipment, and safely lifting up to 50 pounds.

Master's in physical education, exercise science, education with an emphasis in physical education, kinesiology, physiology of exercise or adaptive physical education
Bachelor's in any of the above
Master's in any life science, dance, physiology, health education, recreation administration or physical therapy
15-semester units of upper-division or graduate study in adapted physical education
AND a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

- Experience working with people with disabilities in an exercise/physical education environment (e.g. weight training, flexibility, movement techniques, and aerobics)
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- An understanding of the challenges, emotions, and experiences faced by students with various disabilities, and a demonstrated commitment to support and motivate them.
- Experience in promoting student success and retention in cooperation with the support services on campus.
- A clear ability to perform community outreach including to students, allied health, and medical professionals.

Initial salary placement is based on the current Full-Time Faculty Salary Schedule A. The starting salary range is $61,792.00 - $83,793.00 annually, and is based on verification of education and experience for column and step placement. In addition to the base salary, the successful candidate may also earn an annual Doctoral stipend of $3,290 or an annual multiple Masters' stipend of $2,332, if applicable.
